When it comes to a stroke, there is no time to “wait and see.” A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or reduced. Without oxygen, brain cells can start to die within minutes.
As our parents or grandparents get older, the risk of stroke naturally goes up. But the good news is, knowing what to look out for can save their life and prevent long-term disability.
Remember the B.E. F.A.S.T. Signs
You don’t need to be a doctor to spot a stroke. Just remember this simple checklist if you notice your elderly loved one acting differently:
What “Bringing Back Life” Truly Means
The brain cells that die in the first few minutes cannot be brought back. However, surrounding those dead cells is a larger area of brain tissue that is “stunned” and starving for oxygen, but not yet dead.
If doctors can clear the blockage within that 4 to 6-hour window, they can save that starving tissue. This is what saves the patient’s ability to walk, speak, see, and live an independent life after a stroke
What should you do while waiting for help?
- Stay calm and keep your loved one calm.
- Note the exact time you first noticed the symptoms. The hospital doctors need to know this.
- Do NOT give them any food, water, or medication (like aspirin). If it is a bleeding stroke, aspirin will make it worse.
Prevention is Key: Heart-Healthy Malaysian Meals & Movement
At My Aged Care, we believe the best way to fight stroke is to prevent it by managing high blood pressure.
Our in-house Dietitians plan everyday meals that are low in sodium but packed with local flavor. We focus on Malaysian ingredients that naturally help keep blood pressure down:
- Ulam and Local Greens: Serving raw veggies like cooked bayam (spinach) which are rich in potassium to help lower blood pressure.
- Garlic and Ginger: Using these fresh aromatics heavily to flavor our dishes instead of relying on soy sauce, kicap, or MSG.
- Oats and Local Fruits: Replacing heavy, oily local breakfasts with oats, and serving snacks like (papaya) and jambu batu (guava), which are loaded with antioxidants and fiber.
We also know that staying active keeps the blood vessels healthy. Our in-house Physiotherapists design gentle, customized movement routines for our residents. Whether it is chair exercises, guided morning walks, or strength training, we make sure they move safely according to their own pace.
With our full medical team watching over them 24/7, you can have peace of mind knowing your parents are in safe hands.
